Eminem is on top of the charts again. His 12th studio album, “The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce)” was released on July 12, and Rolling Stone confirmed that it dethroned Taylor Swift’s 12-week chart-topping “The Tortured Poets Department” with more than 281,000 units sold.

The rap legend who has two RIAA diamond-certified albums recorded his 11th consecutive number 1 on the Billboard 200 this past week. With this new release, he finally buries his alter-ego, Slim Shady, which he introduced to his fans from his sophomore album, “The Slim Shady LP.”

The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce)

Marshall Bruce Mathers III’s new album was released 25 years after “The Slim Shady LP'' hit the scene. It’s a far cry from his early days of rapping about menial jobs and high school bullying, but one thing remains the same: name-dropping his fellow rappers, public figures, actors and politicians. Rolling Stone even wrote about how he has repeated his old tricks in his new album.

The album was promoted with a fake obituary for Slim Shady, which was published on the Detroit Free Press in May. It suggested that the elements that defined his alter ego's identity led to his metaphorical demise. It was, after all, still about the unresolved nature of his persona's impact and existence.

The album consists of 19 tracks plus three more bonus songs. Eminem shared on X (formerly Twitter) on how to best listen to his songs so that the narrative is best understood: “Public service announcement: the "death of slim shady" is a conceptual album, therefore, if you listen to songs out of order they might not make sense. Enjoy.”

The album’s lead single, “Houdini,” a reference to the Hungarian-American escape artists and illusionist, was released in May 2024 and quickly became popular because of the controversial lyrics that referenced the Black Eyed Peas, RuPaul, and Megan Thee Stallion. It also interpolates his previous releases, "Without Me", "My Name Is", and "Just Lose It," together with the Steve Miller Band’s 1982 song "Abracadabra."

"Houdini" debuted at number 1 on the Billboard Global 200 and topped in 13 countries, including Australia, Canada and the UK.

Investing in Eminem’s Music Royalties

Royalty Exchange is known as the leading platform for investors interested in earning from music royalties. In May 2024, Eminem’s "Hustlers & Hardcore" sound recording royalties was sold for $56,000, or 4.38 times its value in the last 12 months (LTM). The type of acquisition for this catalog was a fixed-return deal meaning the investor will collect 100% of payments from the rights in this catalog being offered until they receive fixed amount of $87,500.

The catalog has earned $16,144 since 2021, and has a dollage age of 25.03 years. A higher Dollar Age is typically indicative of more stable earnings, as older songs tend to have more predictable royalty streams and could suggest that the substantial growth in earnings could potentially stabilize in the future.

The catalog earned $13,399 in 2023, up from only $178.82 in 2021. That’s a 74 times growth in just two years. This is mainly thanks to the songs being added to Spotify over the course of the past few years.

Much of the earnings come from streaming activities from international sources with $8,786 in the last 12 months.

Spotify is the top music source among users in terms of earnings with $12,663 in the last 12 months. It has more than 13 million streams on the platform.

With Eminem now back in the top spot, it’s clear that music royalties investors will be earning more from the heavy streaming that his past tracks are generating on Spotify and other platforms.
