Taylor Swift and Post Malone will be the biggest contenders at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards thanks to their collaborative success on the song "Fortnight."
Taylor Swift reigns for a second consecutive time with 10 nominations this time. Her song "Fortnight" has eight nominations: Video of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Collaboration, Best Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Visual Effects, and Best Art Direction. Plus, Swift is up for Artist of the Year and Best Pop. She won nine awards from 11 nominations last year, including Artist of the Year and Video of the Year for "Anti-Hero".
Not far behind, with nine nods, is Post Malone. Like Swift, "Fortnight" got him in contention for Video of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Collaboration, Best Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Visual Effects, and Best Art Direction. He also gets a Best Collaboration nod with his current smash "I Had Some Help," featuring Morgan Wallen.
Ariana Grande got six, with "We Can't Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)" vying for Video of the Year, Best Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Editing. Meanwhile, "The Boy Is Mine" makes a bid for Best Visual Effects, while Grande herself is in the running for Artist of the Year.
Also on top of the nominees is Sabrina Carpenter with six, including Artist of the Year and Best Pop. Her "Espresso" was nominated for Song of the Year and Best Editing, while "Please Please Please," featuring Barry Keoghan, is up for Best Direction and Best Art Direction.
The promotional single by Eminem, "Houdini", off his album The Death of Slim Shady is delivered coupled with six nominations, in the categories of Video of the Year, Best Direction, Best Editing, and Best Visual Effects. Eminem is also put across for Artist of the Year and Best Hip Hop.
Additional top nominees for the night were Megan Thee Stallion and SZA, who were tied with five noms, and LISA, Teddy Swims, Dua Lipa, Benson Boone, Anitta, Tyla, and GloRilla, all contenders with three each.
This year, the approximately 29 acts to be nominated at the VMAs for the very first time are Benson Boone, Chappell Roan, Coco Jones, Gracie Abrams, Jelly Roll, Jessie Murph, LE SSERAFIM, Morgan Wallen, Rauw Alejandro, RAYE, Teddy Swims, Sexyy Red, Shaboozey,.
The 15 gender-neutral categories, including Video of the Year, Best Collaboration, and Artist of the Year, are open to fan voting through August 30 on vote.mtv.com. Best New Artist will remain open to voting until the live broadcast on September 10. Social category noms will be announced later.
The 2024 VMAs return to New York, this time to the UBS Arena in Elmont, September 10 at 8 PM ET/PT. Other nominees for Video of the Year include "Fortnight," Ariana Grande's "We Can't Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)," Billie Eilish's "Lunch," Doja Cat's "Paint the Town Red," Eminem's "Houdini," and SZA's "Snooze."
Taylor Swift has won the Video of the Year award a record four times and could look to extend that record. Should she win four VMAs this year, it would tie Beyoncé as the top winner in the show's history. Eminem seeks to break his tie with Peter Gabriel for most VMAs won by a male artist.
The 2024 VMAs will arrive as the 40th anniversary since the very first show at Radio City Music Hall, during which a then up-and-coming performer by the name of Madonna truly stole the show. Now, this event year is going to be even more unforgettable, and so many fans are already primed to just see how it all comes out.
