After our report on the investor who earned a 38.5% ROI on Lil Durk’s songwriter royalties in just two months, here’s another success story at Royalty Exchange.

American rapper and actor Nelly's single "Batter Up" asset listing on Royalty Exchange exhibits the kind of investment strategy that most buyers would dream of replicating. In October 2022, the royalties were sold for $13,650, which was 10.60 times the earnings in the last 12 months.

Then in April 2023, it was resold for $17,500, which was 11.77 times the earnings in the last 12 months. That translates to about a 28% price hike in just six months!

The new owner of the royalties received $1,087 in total in royalties over the course of only six months and sale proceeds of $16,100, only a few months after purchasing the listing. That's a very impressive ROI of 21.5%!

Nelly's Batter Up

Although “Batter Up” was a moderate success compared to the first three singles from the Diamond-certified album “Country Grammar,” this track managed to peak at number nineteen on the ARIA Singles Chart in 2001. New Musical Express (NME) called it, “like DMX with a humor infusion, a bold, barking claim to the big league.” Vice described it as “a wordplay-filled ode to both the sport and his hustle.”

On the 20th anniversary of the album, Nelly spoke about the influence it gave on the next generation of rappers. He said, “I think it allowed people from not just New York, L.A. or Atlanta—places that were already established—to believe that they could be a major player in this game if they worked their ass off, and if they came up with something that was appreciated by everybody. They could have success if they just tried and gave it their all. The thing about rap is, it always changes. Nobody holds it down forever. Evolution is inevitable. Things always must change. But I instilled that belief in a lot of people that aren't from those major contributing cities: If you come up with something you can really sink your teeth into and relate to with other people, you could be at the top of the game. That's all I ever wanted to do, was just be heard, man.”

Royalty Earnings

The catalog is continuing to grow in its earnings, seeing a new peak each year since 2018. Last year’s total royalties received were $1,924.58, a 251% increase since 2018.

Streaming is the leading source of earnings for this listing with $1,424, followed by Live Performances with $217. Spotify streams reached 30 million while YouTube views are now at 37.5 million.
