James Blunt Pledges to Legally Change His Name Based on Public Vote if His Album Reaches No. 1—With One Key Condition

Musician James Blunt has pledged to legally change his name by deed poll, but only if the re-release of his debut album Back to Bedlam reaches No. 1 on the charts. The 50-year-old artist made the announcement in a video message posted on X, where he revealed the album's re-release is scheduled for October 11, 2023, in honor of its 20th anniversary. Back to Bedlam features iconic hits such as "You're Beautiful," "Goodbye My Lover," and "High."
In the video, Blunt stated, "I'll let the people decide," referring to the name change, but added a caveat: "If it doesn't go to number one, I'm not changing my name." He encouraged fans to submit their suggestions with the hashtag #jameswho, promising that the most popular suggestion would be the name he adopts if the album tops the charts.
Fans quickly responded, generating over 800,000 views and 2,000 comments within hours of the post. The leading suggestion at the time was "Blunty McBluntface," a name Blunt specifically mentioned in a recent interview on The Chris Moyles Show that he hoped to avoid. Other suggestions included humorous options like "Blames Junt," "James Corden," and "Nick Pope."
Back to Bedlam was one of the best-selling albums in the UK during the 2000s and currently ranks 17th on the list of all-time best-sellers in UK chart history. Its single "You're Beautiful" topped both UK and US charts, propelling Blunt to international fame. Since then, he has released seven more albums, with his most recent, Who We Used To Be, arriving in 2023.
Blunt will also embark on a tour across the UK and Europe to celebrate the album's anniversary, with notable stops at London's O2 Arena in February 2024, along with performances in Belfast, Dublin, Leeds, Glasgow, and Manchester.
