Kendrick Lamar, known for his fierce lyrical prowess, didn’t shy away from a heated rap battle with Drake earlier this year. Despite the intensity of the feud, Lamar insists he is not driven by anger. In his first major profile since the highly publicized clash, Lamar spoke with former Top Dawg Entertainment teammate SZA for Harper’s Bazaar's 2024 November Voices Issue. During the interview, Lamar reflected on the concept of duality, particularly the coexistence of love and war, which he believes is essential to understanding his actions and artistry.

“I don’t believe I’m an angry person,” Kendrick Lamar explained. “But I do believe in love and war, and I think they both need to exist. My awareness of that allows me to respond to things without letting them define me. I let them flow through me, and that’s where I find balance.”

While his track "Not Like Us" was pivotal in the feud with Drake, Kendrick emphasized that the phrase holds a much deeper cultural meaning for him. “'Not Like Us' is the energy of who I am, the kind of man I represent,” he said. “It’s about standing for something, having morals and values, and not pandering. It’s about being able to recognize your mistakes and confront them without feeling diminished as a man.”

Kendrick added, “When I think of 'Not Like Us,' I think of myself and anyone who identifies with that mindset—people who can face their fears and express vulnerability without losing their integrity.” The track, which blends scathing lyrics with Mustard’s signature Cali bounce, recently set a new record by spending 21 weeks atop the Billboard Hot Rap Songs chart, surpassing Lil Nas X’s "Old Town Road."

With no signs of slowing down, "Not Like Us" is expected to be a strong contender at the 2025 Grammy Awards when nominations are announced later this year.
