Kendrick Lamar’s dominance in the music industry is unquestionable. With accolades that include a Pulitzer Prize, multiple Grammy Awards, chart-topping hits, and an upcoming performance at the Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show, the rapper has established himself as a formidable figure in the world of music. However, when it comes to acting, Kendrick remains relatively inexperienced.
According to actor Don Cheadle, Lamar once had the opportunity to expand his talents into film. During a recent interview on Way Up With Angela Yee, Cheadle revealed that Lamar was offered a role in the Miles Davis biopic Miles Ahead. Cheadle had envisioned Lamar playing the role of Junior in the movie.
“When we shot the ‘D.N.A.’ video, Kendrick was really committed to the role. He stayed in character the entire time,” Cheadle shared. “I had thought about casting him in Miles Ahead, and we talked about it for a while. But ultimately, Kendrick said, ‘I don’t think I’m ready for that right now. I’m working on a project and I don’t want to do anything halfway.’” That project turned out to be Lamar’s critically acclaimed album To Pimp a Butterfly. Cheadle agreed that Kendrick made the right choice in focusing on his music.
The role of Junior ultimately went to LaKeith Stanfield, but Lamar did dip his toes into the acting world later, appearing in 50 Cent’s Power series. Though Lamar may not have pursued film at the time, his artistic choices have continually underscored his deep commitment to his craft.
